Episode 1: Podcast Transcription
Hello, welcome back. My name is Heather and you're listening to Legacy of Love, the podcast. Today we're exploring the benefits of self-leadership. Self-leadership is the act of leading yourself. This means being aware of your own thoughts, feelings, actions, making choices that are in alignment with your personal values and goals. Oftentimes, it's easy to look outside of ourselves for validation and asking questions such as, am I doing this right?
Or, what will others think of me? Or Is this the way I'm supposed to take care of myself? Follow through, parent, show up in the world? When we pause and really think about what we're asking, it's easy to recognize that you might be giving away your personal power and intuitive decision making skills by looking to another to affirm your individual choices.
I am very aware that this happens in my life, and it's easy to do the compare and despair dance of looking out and comparing someone else's point in their life, their success, or how far they've made it in their own business or life, and look to my beginning and start to say, wow, I'm not far enough, or, wow, I haven't done it the way I should have or could have.
And what I've begun to recognize is that it's human nature and we wanna fit in and be accepted in a community cultivating a sense of belonging and safety is paramount to the success we feel as individuals and families in the world. But the truth is that self-leadership is a valuable skill to have in all areas of our life.
When you are able to lead yourself, you are more likely to achieve your goals, both personally and professionally. You're also more likely to have a positive impact on those around you. Be the change, as they say, as you learn to trust yourself, to know what's best for you, you can start to build your own capacity to quickly make decisions that benefit your personal and professional development without threatening your relationships or safety as a human being.
And you might even inspire others to believe in their own capacity to shine as well. It's a practice, not perfection, and definitely is worthwhile to try. I have recognized that as I listen to my own intuition and trust my own inner guidance, I am really able to make decisions that align more with my personal values.
And then if I recognize that maybe I'd like to pivot or try something different, or it was an epic fail and didn't have the outcome that I was thinking it might have, then I can make a new decision. But many people before me have said and inspired me, that action leads to confidence and practice over performance is so key. And as we take bold, courageous steps forward, we begin to build the confidence in ourselves to continue to show up and do what's best for us as individuals.
So a few things that self-leadership are going to offer you when you begin this practice is a more consistent achievement of your own goals. You are able to create lasting change in your life by setting your own definitions of success and then reaching those milestones and celebrating them and recognizing that you're building trust with yourself to follow through. You build better relationships with your friends and family, community and world because you're able to really recognize what you can consciously say yes to and what you need to say. thank you. but no, I don't have room in my life for that right now.
Thank you so much for thinking of me. I'm honored. You're more capable of communicating effectively, more capable of managing stress, and you make better decisions because they're in alignment with your true self.
I often find myself checking in with my children and seeing how they're going with decision making. And one of the things that we've recognized is it's difficult to make decisions. It's difficult to feel like you can know which direction you wanna go, especially as you're emerging as a young person or someone who's going through transition or trying to re-identify where you fit in in the world.
And I think a lot of this has been questions that we as a culture and maybe a global community have really had to get quiet and think about since our world shifted so much. A few short years ago, many people realized that they were moving in extremely fast-paced ways without a lot of intentional direction.
And when we had an opportunity as a collective to get quiet, a lot of people will recognize that they weren't on the path that they were looking for. When we awaken to this recognition within the self, we're given the opportunity to reflect and decide which way we're going from here.
And this is the definition of self leadership with so much contrast in the world and lots of opinions of how it could or should be done, it is so important to discern what feels right for you as an individual and your family to trust that life throws curve balls at us all. And there are some new narratives that could be rewritten based on stories that no longer serve us as a collective. And it's time to awaken to new possibilities. With this top of mind and in our hearts, we can truly decide to create a new pathway forward.
And I invite you to listen with love, be kind and courageous, and show up for yourself in a way that really aligns with the truth of who you are at the core of your being.
